DRAW IN THE CITY is a photography book by Keita Kojima, who is also a graphic designer. The photos are created using “sclptuer on photo,” a method by which photos taken are loaded into a 3D software, and three-dimensional drawings are superimposed on the photos for rendering. This work is a drawing for the city=Shibuya and also looks like a mark inscribed in the location.

----

DRAW IN THE CITY
3D drawings are superimposed on the city.By making drawings three-dimensional, a line starts to have its body and continues to exist in the space. This action seems to be just graffiti as well as a ritual to inscribe life into the location.

----

DRAW IN THE CITY

These are what Keita Kojima’s sculptural works ‘Word is Human’ are output three-dimensionally.
After digital data are output using a 3D printer, they are polished piece by piece and finished with paint, making them special editions. They are limited-edition works comprising 10 pieces of works. The works can also be seen via an AR app. In the Box, there are prints taken by the author in Shibuya using the app. ※The works are made-to-order. It takes about one month to deliver it.

When worrying about something indecisively, the mind is flooded with words, and torrents of words almost crush me.I am supposed to think by myself, but words appear one after another to press me.I think that if it were not for words, I would neither think nor be bothered by them.Every time I get into such a situation, I wonder if people are controlled and moved by words, rather than they think with words.

‘Augmented/Words in the City’ is an installation work that has made tweets to the city three-dimensional and has been set up with AR (Augmented Reality). This work is a photography book of AR sculptures set up in Yurakucho as the second work of ‘Augmented/Words in the City’, which was released in April 2020 in Shibuya. Kojima walks through the city, collects words coming to mind, make them sculptures, and set them up with AR in floating locations. Three-dimensionalized words become entities and continue floating in the city like creatures.

This object is not a reality but a virtual object. Its presence is virtual, but it actually exists there by making it work with location information. And, it is something that can be seen by those who can see it but cannot by those who cannot. This work dreams the way that reality and virtuality should be and suggests a new ‘now’ in which reality and virtuality are mixed with each other.

「Augmented/Words in the City」は都市へのつぶやきを立体にし、 AR( Augmented Reality) で設置したインスタレーション作品。

DOUBLE is a photo book by graphic designer and AR artist Keita Kojima.
It has been created using a technique called “sclptuer on photo,” which consists of layering onto a photo the 3D scan data of the location where it was photographed.
In this book, the photos are perceived as the eyes of a machine and the 3D scans as the touch of a machine, to create visuals which combine the senses of sight and touch as a way to represent the forms of urban settings.

----

DOUBLE
The senses of sight and touch
The world as projected onto the eye is said to be made of reflections of light reconstructed by the brain to create a visual image. So then, what is the form of this object I’m touching now—the form of this world?

The eyes of a machine (photos,) and the touch of a machine (3D scans).
And my own eyes and my own sense of touch, which engage with these. By mixing all of this together to create reconstructions, perhaps some of the true essence of the urban settings will be revealed.

Keita Kojima
Graphic designer. Born in Hyogo in 1985, based in Tokyo.
Graduated from Kanazawa College of Art in 2010 with Bachelor of Visual Design.

----

DOUBLE

The locus of human consciousness is the subject of continual research, but the truth of the matter remains unclear. Even so, I believe that the ego is derived from words, and that it is within words that the ego resides. Without words, you would have neither thought nor concern. Viewed in this way, the true essence of a person is in their words; it seems like one could even go so far as to say that it’s less a case of people using words, and more that people are controlled by words, governed by words. The words are the people. The Word is Human is a series of figures, the heads of which are words that have been made into objects. There are many works that transform words and writing into 3D objects but, by directly putting words in the place of human heads, this work focuses directly on words and people. Anonymous figures stand still in the city, dressed in contemporary attire and resembling both men and women; these figures with words for heads are symbols of the fact that everyone’s essence is to be found in words.

A new work by Keita Kojima, who has been using augmented reality (AR) to visually explore the relationship between cities, calligraphy, words, and people.Kojima draws calligraphy drawings on a non-existent city drawn by an artificial intelligence (AI) called Stable Diffusion.
He has been communicating with the city by inscribing calligraphy objects, considering calligraphy as a means to touch and communicate with the subject. The city depicted in Stable Diffusion is an AI-created city that does not exist anywhere. It cannot be seen or touched in the real world, but it certainly exists there. He inscribes "not found" on the city.
He communicates with the city that exists, though it is nowhere to be found. This act is an act of touching not only the city, but also the very words that create it.

What is "existence" in this age?Through writing, Kojima touches upon the contradictory world created by words.

Tokyo-based artist Keita Kojima (b. 1985) uses words and calligraphy in his works, attempting to identify the city by leaving traces in the space. In this work, he attaches a camera with an automatic shutter setting to his body, wanders around the city, and overlays calligraphy on the images (fragments) collected by the camera.
Kojima believes that language has the ability to disclose the world and reveal hidden aspects of reality, and that writing is not only a way to externalize our inner world, but also a means of communicating with the unseen. In "Neo-Tokyo: Walk and Write," Kojima attempts to give the city a signature by overlaying calligraphy on the fragments of the city he has wandered and collected, to plant a new layer of meaning in the city, and to reveal the relationship between language, perception, and human experience.
